"Flip Dog Knee to Elbow" Your Way to a Strong Core

I am a big fan of exercises that do multiple things at once. And I don't know anyone who doesn't want a stronger core and a more mobile psoas. Pso-what? PSOAS. It's a super awesome and complicated muscle that attaches your leg to your spine so you can flex your hip and flex and twist your trunk (among other things).

Great Mobility Drill for Lower Back Relief

I want to share this yummy lower back release/core engagement drill that I've been doing for a few minutes each day with awesome results. This is a great one if you feel achy and stiff in your lower back from too much sitting. You'll need a yoga block for this one (you can get these 2 for $10 on most online retailers). You can use a soft foam roller too in a pinch.

Try These Kettlebell Exercises to Get Abs Like a Spartan

Anyone who has watched the 2006 film 300 will attest, King Leonidas and his ferocious, hard-charging Spartan army have abs to die for. Booty Poppin Birthday Flow

Booty Poppin Birthday Flow

My beautiful and talented friend, trainer and yoga instructor Morgan McEvilly made me this AMAZING 50 minute yoga class as my 41st birthday present. It was the perfect practice to share with my friends on a recent camping trip to Mendocino and on my vacation to Stinson Beach. She incorporates my favorite style of flow which starts with a slow progression through each phase of a sequence and then builds to a faster transition. And lots of yummy foot and hand work. I just had to share it with you! If you're body, mind and spirit needs a reset, this beautiful woman and practice will do the trick!

Consider Offset Training for Core, Stability and Athleticism

Consider Offset Training for Core, Stability and Athleticism

“Offset training” when you perform a complex exercise carrying weight on just one side of your body can be a great way to challenge your core, build stability and improve athleticism. Bracing your core, locking in your shoulders and maintain tension are key for successfully performing any offset exercise. In this post I share three videos of my favorite offset exercises which, depending on your goals and baseline fitness, are perfect as a primary exercise, warm up or finisher.

Try These 6 Moves for a Strong Back

Try These 6 Moves for a Strong Back

In this video I show you six of my current favorite lower and mid back strengthening exercises that also force you to work your core and arms making for a terrific workout. If you are working on weight loss you can circuit these moves in sets of ~15 or more reps with 60s rest between sets. If you are working on basic strength you can increase the weight and try 3 strict sets of 12 reps with 60s-90s rest in between. Or if you're looking to hypertrophy (build muscle) up the weight even more and try 4 sets of 8-12 reps and give yourself 90s-120s rest in between sets. For more info on how to build a strong back and for more advanced back moves check out this blog post.

Here’s Where You’ll Be Hurting After Starting to Work Out Again

Thanks to my pal Andrew Fiouzi for including me in this feature in MEL Magazine on how you can avoid unnecessary pain from your workouts. It’s a new year and perhaps you’re like the millions of other people around the world dedicated to finally getting, like, totally ripped, brah. What this means in practical terms is that if you haven’t worked out since fourth-grade gym class, you’re going to be hurting in a lot of new and interesting places this month. But what kind of pain does your journey to You 2.0 (or 1.1) have in store? Jonathan Jordan, an award-winning trainer, explains how each type of workout will hurt, and how to heal more quickly.

Versa Climber: One of the Best and Least Used Assets in the Gym

Versa Climber: One of the Best and Least Used Assets in the Gym

I like to think of the Versa Climber as the Regina George of cardio equipment. She's fabulous but she's evil. Just ask my clients TrishDubJasonSarah or Tom. In all seriousness, the Versa Climber is one of the best and often most underused assets in the gym. It's an amazing tool for low impact, total body high intensity intervals that help burn fat, build strength and improve movement patterns. It's scalable to your fitness level, can be appropriate even for those with many common joint problems/injuries and is extremely efficient. So if the Versa Climber in your gym is collecting dust, give it a shot and get your quadruped swagger on

Simple Steps to Headstand Success

Simple Steps to Headstand Success

2015 was the year of the headstand. Half a dozen clients this year came to me wishing they could do a headstand. Some thought it would be a fun performance goal and demonstration of upper body and core strength. Some felt self conscious doing inversions during yoga class against a wall. And one had a long term goal of doing a full, unassisted handstand. So I turned to Kathleen Beachler (Personal Training Manager at Equinox Pine Street and former gymnast) to help.
