More than 17,000 scientific studies and reports have well documented the powerful benefits of sleep for the brain. Matthew Walker PhD. summarizes it best in his illuminating book Why We Sleep. Sleep helps us live longer; enhances memory; makes us look and feel better; keeps us fit; lowers food cravings; protects us from cancers, dementia and other diseases; lowers our risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes; defends us against colds, the flu and other viruses; and makes us feel happier, less depressed and less anxious. AND IT’S FREE!
As personal trainers we work with lots of folks struggling to balance the stresses of life. Those who carve out time to exercise and eat healthy often sacrifice sleep to get it all done. Making sleep a priority can be challenging, but it is equally as important to our well-being as nutrition and exercise.
What’s that? You are fine regularly “getting by” on 4-5 hours of sleep each night? Hmmmm. Only 2.5% of the population has a sleep need less than six hours per night. The average person needs 7-8 hours of QUALITY sleep. Sleep deficiency diminishes our cognitive function, physical health and metabolism. It leads to inflammation, memory and concentration difficulties, increased hunger and poor physical performance. It has also been linked to depression, suicide and risk-taking behavior. YUCK! So let’s discuss some small and effective changes you can start implementing today to unlock the power of great sleep.
