15 Goal Ideas to Inspire More Movement and Joy
/Traditionally a lot of people jump into the holidays with two feet (see what I did there?!) and the best of intentions for crushing big fitness and wellness goals starting in the new year. Trainers like me used to see spikes in new gym memberships and requests for strict meal plans (instead of spikes in Coronavirus variants and virtual training sessions). Now we’re having discussions about how to de-stress, improve sleep and generally use movement as way to find joy. AMAZING!
I'm talking with a lot of my clients this month about goals for next year and it really pleases me to hear what my humans are coming up with. All goals that are safe are valid in my book. Some may need more time than others, but they can become helpful tools on the way to wellness.
If you are struggling with motivation and finding a goal that resonates with you, here are a few of my favorites my peeps are going for in the coming months that will influence their weekly fitness routines.
Achieve 30 minutes of stretching and mobility homework 2x/week.
Workout 2x/week with their partner and have fun doing it no matter where they physically are (home, visiting family, on sabbatical).
Improve swimming performance by working on breathing efficiency drills and shoulder mobility.
Feel confident wearing a tank top by adding in some extra arm work to each total body workout.
Improve ankle mobility so long walks and hikes become more comfortable.
Safely finish a 10k, half marathon, full marathon or triathlon.
Prepare the body for the possibility of pregnancy.
Improve upper body strength to make caring for and playing with kids easier and injury-free.
Strengthen a joint to avoid or postpone surgery.
Integrate more dance movements into strength training to move and feel more joyful (this might win as my favorite because it’s challenging me to channel my inner dancer too!).
Get ready for ski season, polo season, a hiking trip, ALC and a squash competition (these are from multiple clients not just one!)
Do a bodyweight pull up this year.
Reduce body fat by 0.5-1%/month through improved nutritional habits and walking.
Achieve a certain # on the bar for a squat, deadlift or bench press.
And honestly, some clients reflected on their 2022 programs and decided their goal is to continue that work. And that's awesome! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
