SF’s Dynamic Duo: Chiropractors and So Much More!
/I get asked all the time by clients, gym members and colleagues who I trust for care when I’m in pain or injured. Dr. Brad Bailey and Dr. Nick Cruze at SF Premier Chiropractic are hands-down my go-to guys for keeping my body in great working order. Over the years they have seen me through acute issues from a spinal disc injury, pinched nerves, back spasms, muscle pulls, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, my first marathon and a variety of other challenges that comes from today’s technology-centric life (not to mention being a personal trainer, massage therapist and runner). They have successfully helped dozens of my clients recover from injuries, reduce pain and improve posture. Literally every person I have sent them has improved and raves about the quality of care. They are the real deal and I’m so proud to have them as JJFit partners. And I’m grateful that Dr. Cruze took a few minutes to be interviewed here for those curious about their practice.
1. What is your approach to patient care at SF Premier Chiropractic? What makes your practice unique for Bay Area patients?
Unfortunately many of the chiropractic offices in the city have a set template of care and they hope that the patient fits into their approach. Not us! Dr. Bailey and I treat the individual as well as the condition. When you come to our offices we get to the root of the problem and send you home with a plan for the management of the condition to continue on your own. Simply put, we take a patient-focused approach to everything we do.
2. What can a patient expect during an initial assessment?
After checking in at the front desk you will meet with your chiropractor one/one in a private treatment room. We’ll start with a health history assessment to make sure we get a thorough background on you and your condition. Often there is an injury or lifestyle behavior that could be contributing to pain, poor mobility or other issues. Then we’ll complete a physical exam to determine the appropriate treatment and after reviewing with the patient we’ll begin the recommended hands on treatment which can include a mix of soft tissue work, physical adjustment and pain management modalities.
3. What are some of the different pain management modalities you use?
For people in acute/significant pain managing that pain often needs to come before the active work of recovery of the underlying issue. In these cases we rely on various proven techniques and the latest technologies. For spasms and swelling resulting from acute muscle damage and/or disc injuries we employ motor nerve stimulation and/or TENS using our MarcPro or PowerDot systems. For a triggered low back we might additionally employ flexion-distraction. We will often pair these with kinesio tape to promote proper biomechanics and support damaged tissues and lymph flow. The modalities we employ are always evolving to keep abreast of the latest in research centered on high end athletes so the list here is ever growing!
4. How do you help patients recover from being "desk bound"?
This is one of our favorite (and most commonly seen) challenges. Our focus around our "desk bound" clients is first to identify what breakdowns are occurring. Our habits around desk jobs can cause issues from back pain, slumped postures and headaches to extremity issues like chronic shoulder pain or carpal tunnel. Once identified we work on restoring the involved tissues to good health and function while building a self-care routine designed to accelerate changes and help develop long term benefits of care. Finally we educate clients about what positions, movements and habits are contributing to the root cause and help take steps to correct and mitigate them. This is probably the most overlooked step in a lot of cases but vital since these daily stressors will often create relapses when not accounted for.
5. Do you help athletes prepare for events?
Absolutely. Many of our athletes use us for maintenance care to keep themselves race ready. But we also have many athletes that drop in the office in panic mode needing some help days before a race. We have many inflammation modalities that help clear a joint or muscle to increase the chances that you will be able to get to your race, complete it and hopefully CRUSH IT!
